    • Born in Bury, Lancashire, she was the second child of Rev. Edward John Sewell Lamburn and Clara. Her brother, John Battersby Crompton Lamburn, also became a writer and entomologist. From a young age, Crompton aspired to become a teacher.

    After winning a scholarship, she attended Royal Holloway College in London, graduating in with a degree in Classics.

    Teaching and Writing Career

    After graduating, Crompton returned to her former school as a teacher.

    At the age of 27, she moved to London and began writing seriously. Eventually, she decid
